To cover all the essential basics of batik and boutique in detail
(Part- 1)
(Part- 2)
Here, I have attempted to discuss the essential basics of batik-boutique.
You will take responsibility for the described practical tasks. If necessary, inform me about lentil soup, goat meat, and pilaf preparation at home.
Vat, Tie-Dye (Soluble) Color 1% Sulfuric Acid 2% Water 97%
Procedure: First, in a small container, dilute 1% color in water. Take water in a plastic or clay pot, similar to the size of the cloth, and mix the color. Again, mix sulfuric acid in cold water in another pot. Dip the cloth first in the color solution for 5 minutes, then in the acid solution for another 5 minutes. Repeat this process thrice alternately between color and acid solutions. Finally, rinse the cloth in clean water, then dry it in shade to obtain the desired color.
Vat (Insoluble) Grams per 100% fabric Color 1% (3 teaspoons) Hydrox 3% (9 teaspoons) Caustic soda 1% (3 teaspoons) Water 95% (285 teaspoons – approximate)
Procedure: First, take an aluminum or steel pot according to the amount of fabric and boil water. Once the water is boiling, add 1% color, followed by 3% hydroxide and 1% caustic soda to the boiling water. Stir well in the boiling water. Handle caustic soda with caution. The water will boil up. Now immerse the fabric in the mixed color and chemicals and stir well. Boil for 10-15 minutes, then remove the fabric, rinse it thoroughly in cold water, squeeze out the excess water, and dry it in the shade.
Color Combination (Vat, Tie-Dye)
- Red + Orange = Brick red
- Red + Purple = Aubergine
- Yellow + Green = Parrot green
- Yellow + Orange = Mustard gold
- Blue + Green = Peacock blue
- Blue + Purple = Gray color
Vat Color Calculation (Boiled cloth) Any color 1 tola / 1 piece of saree (Thick cloth) Any color 1.5 tola / 1 piece of saree Hydrox 4 tola / 1 piece of saree Caustic soda 4 tola / 1 piece of saree
Amount of Wax and Other Chemicals in BatikWhite wax (paraffin) 250 grams Red wax (beeswax) 200 grams Resin 50 grams
Amount of Wax and Other Chemicals in Jhanti White wax (paraffin) 500 grams Red wax (beeswax) 400 grams Resin 100 grams
Amount of Wax and Other Chemicals in Brush White wax (paraffin) 400 grams Red wax (beeswax) 200 grams Resin 100 grams
Work and Concept of Wax For batik work, the most necessary equipment includes wax and resin. There are two to three types of wax used. Wax and resin are mixed together so that the wax mixture adheres to the fabric. For this purpose, a precise calculation of wax and resin is provided below:
White wax 50% grams/teaspoon Red wax 40% grams/teaspoon Resin 10% grams/teaspoon
However, our preference for this hundred percent calculation depends on the design. For example, if we want to make a delicate design or want to keep more white parts in the design and reduce the empty part, we will reduce the percentage of white wax in the wax mixture and increase the amount of red wax. Then the percentage calculation of the mixture can be-
White wax 40% grams/teaspoon Red wax 50% grams/teaspoon Resin 10% grams/teaspoon
However, the amount of resin is the same in all cases. Again, if we choose to work with thick designs or want to take more empty parts in the design, then the percentage calculation of the wax mixture may be the same as before.
Calculation of Prussian Color per Gram (1 tola = 1 teaspoon) Vat cloth 1 tola color/gaz fabric Thick cloth 1.5 tola color/gaz fabric Water 80% 240 teaspoons Salt 9% 27 teaspoons Urea 5% 15 teaspoons Soda ash/ Fabric Raw Soda 5% 15 teaspoons Time 15 minutes after each hour of total 1 hour
Procedure: First, soak the selected fabric in 10% – 15% cold water. Keep it in a hot water pan, mix 1% color paste and keep it for 4/5 minutes. Take another pan according to the fabric and soak the paste in hot water according to the amount of fabric. Now rinse the fabric in the water and soak the fabric in the water soaked in salt 9%, 5% urea and 5% soda ash. Keep it in small dishes. After a while, keep the fabric in salt, then urea, then soda ash soaked water, and keep stirring in a good way so that no part of the fabric remains. When the time is over, rinse the fabric in a large amount of cold water, until clean water is removed. Then dry it in the shade.
